About NERD — New England Reptile Distributors
NERD is the parent of Zoo Creatures.
NERD began the way many reptile breeders do: a hobbyist with a passion for reptiles starts a personal collection. The collection grows, word spreads, and the animals start paying for themselves. Before you know it, you have one of the largest reptile breeders in the Northeast.
Kevin McCurley, NERD's founder and owner, is that hobbyist. Kevin understands that to some people, snakes are strange — a scary, creepy mystery. Unlike mammals, or even other reptiles, snakes have no arms, no legs and no eyelids. They can't blink, so they always seem to be looking at you. “We don't identify with them,” says McCurley. “They're like a boogeyman for people.”
A herp enthusiast since early childhood, Kevin first focused his breeding on Pituophis and other large colubrids. Over time his interest turned to pythons — particularly the ones fewer keepers were working with at the time: retics (often thought to be too big and too psycho) and ball pythons. That focus has brought a myriad of color morphs and combinations to the NERD collection, many of them the first ever bred, right here at the NERD facility.

The NERD philosophy
Start with quality animals. Keep them right.
When it comes to the herp trade, our philosophy is simple. If we start with quality animals and maintain them properly, we can offer an animal that makes getting a new reptile a truly rewarding experience. We work to meet each customer's needs and offer continued support. We want you to enjoy your reptiles as much as we enjoy ours, and we go all out to provide the very best animals available.
Growth
NERD and Zoo Creatures continue to grow
NERD grew in stages — first to a 5,000 sq ft breeding center, then to the current 14,000 sq ft building that houses both the NERD breeding facility and our retail pet store, Zoo Creatures, in the heart of New England in New Hampshire. Ball and reticulated python morphs remain a primary focus, but the collection also boasts monitors, green tree pythons, boa constrictors, rock iguanas, and “Wally” — the friendly resident 8-foot alligator who stands guard in the basement.
Awareness and education
Face to face with the natural world
Public education and awareness is one of NERD's objectives. We promote awareness and conservation of habitat and species, and offer educational lectures in our area to schools, scout groups, churches and universities.
Species are being lost before they are ever discovered. Education and up-close encounters can do the most to change how people see the natural world and the creatures we share it with. To book NERD for an educational experience, call (603) 382-3338.
