Small tanks, big personalities

New fish arrive every week. Our fish department has a great selection of freshwater fish, nano fish, freshwater shrimp and inverts, all in our 8,000-gallon aquarium showroom.

A tank fits almost anywhere: a bedroom dresser, a desk, a corner of the living room. It's a calm, living window the whole family can enjoy.

  • Nano fish
  • Freshwater shrimp
  • Betta fish
  • Angelfish
  • Cichlids
  • Aquatic inverts

Why fish make great pets

  • Calming. In a 2015 study at the UK's National Marine Aquarium, watching a stocked tank lowered people's heart rate and blood pressure.
  • Great for small spaces. A nano tank works on a desk or dresser.
  • Quiet, no walks, and no fur.
  • Kids learn a routine: feed, check the water, help with water changes.
  • The honest part: water testing and regular water changes are the real job, and a new tank needs time to cycle before fish go in.

A good first pet for kids?

Fish are a classic first pet. Kids can feed and help test the water with an adult. The CDC says children under 5 shouldn't clean the tank or handle aquarium items, and everyone washes up after their hands go in the water.

Cool fish facts

  • Bettas breathe air. A special labyrinth organ lets them gulp oxygen at the surface.
  • Male bettas build nests out of saliva-coated bubbles to hold their eggs.
  • Discus parents feed their babies a mucus they make on their skin. The fry graze off mom and dad for their first weeks.
  • Angelfish are cichlids, cousins of the bold, busy fish in our cichlid tanks.

Setting up at home

We carry a full selection for feeding and nutrition, aquarium and water maintenance, decor and more from Fluval, Marineland, API, Seachem and others, plus an extensive selection of live aquatic plants. We also sell RO (reverse osmosis) water, so you can fill your tank with water you can count on.

  • Tank: bigger is easier, because more water stays stable longer
  • Filter and heater: most tropical fish need both
  • Water: conditioner for tap water, or our RO water
  • Cycle: let the good bacteria build up before adding fish
  • Food: a quality flake or pellet, sized to your fish
