Amphibians

Dart frogs, tree frogs, pacman frogs, smooth toads, newts and more

Our amphibians are colorful, charming and often vocal, and keeping one is rewarding. A planted frog tank brings a little rainforest into your living room.

Why they make great pets

  • Great for small spaces. Many frogs live happily in a tank on a desk or shelf.
  • Calming to watch, especially in a planted vivarium.
  • A dart frog tank with springtails and isopods is a living ecosystem kids can learn from.
  • Pacman frogs and dart frogs often live 10 to 15 years.
  • The honest part: amphibians are display pets more than handling pets. They need clean, dechlorinated water, steady humidity, and live insects.

A good first pet for kids?

For older kids who like to watch and care for a pet, yes. A pacman frog is a simple first amphibian: one frog, one small tank. Amphibian skin is thin and soaks up whatever is on your hands, so handling should be rare, brief and with clean, wet hands.

The CDC says children under 5 shouldn't handle or touch reptiles or amphibians, or anything in their enclosures. These animals can carry Salmonella even when they look healthy. Everyone washes their hands with soap and water after handling the animal or anything in its tank, and an adult watches over younger kids.

Cool amphibian facts

  • Amphibians breathe and take in water through their skin. That's why their tanks need to stay damp and clean.
  • Captive-bred dart frogs aren't poisonous. Wild ones get their toxins from the ants and mites they eat.
  • Frogs use their eyes to swallow. They pull their eyeballs down into the mouth to help push food toward the throat.
  • Pacman frogs bury themselves with only their eyes showing and wait for food to walk by.
  • Newts can regrow a lost leg, even as adults.

Setting up at home

Amphibians have specific humidity, moisture and temperature needs. In the store you'll find heating and lighting equipment, food and decor, and several types and styles of vivariums and aquariums. Read our pacman frog and dart frog care sheets.

  • Enclosure: a glass tank or vivarium with a secure lid
  • Water: dechlorinated and always clean
  • Humidity: regular misting and a substrate that holds moisture
  • Heat: gentle and steady; check the care sheet for your species
