Substrate is the part of bioactive husbandry that's usually inconsistent bag to bag. Ours is screened to a consistent particle size with the dust removed, so humidity behaves predictably and the animal isn't impacted or irritated.
The drainage-layer media sits under it to build a proper bioactive floor — a false bottom that moves water away from the root zone and keeps the substrate from going anaerobic.
