Enclosure
Vinegaroons are burrowers. Give floor space and deep substrate, not height. A 5–10 gallon tank works for one adult.
Add a cork bark hide and use a secure lid. Keep one per enclosure.
Temperature
Room temperature up to the low 80s, about 70–82°F.
Lighting & UVB
None needed. They are active at night.
Humidity
Keep the lower layers of substrate slightly moist. Mist one area now and then and let the surface dry between mistings.
Substrate
Use 4–6 inches of coconut fiber or organic topsoil, with a little sand if you like. Pack it so a burrow holds its shape.
Diet & feeding
Feed crickets or roaches about once or twice a week.
Remove uneaten prey within a day.
Water
Keep a shallow dish of fresh water.
Handling
Handle as little as possible. A scared vinegaroon may pinch or spray its acid, which stings the eyes and any small cuts.
If you have to move it, guide it into a cup. Wash your hands after.
Common problems & the vet
If you think something is wrong, find an exotics vet or stop by and ask us.
- Hiding for weeks: it is likely molting in its burrow. Don't dig it up.
- Stuck molt: usually substrate that is too dry
- Don't feed for about a week after a molt
